Dr. May Dobal is a second year Faculty Fellow at Du Bois House. She is originally from Brooklyn, NY and has spent her professional life in New Orleans, LA, Austin, TX, where she received her PhD in Nursing Systems, and Detroit, MI. While in Detroit, in addition to her faculty and research commitments, she mentored high school, undergraduate, and graduate students and advised them in the areas of career planning, scholarship, and research.
Dr. Dobal just completed a two-year post-doctoral research fellow in the School of Nursing (SON). She has accepted a lectureship in the SON and will be teaching Culture and the 'Isms' in Healthcare and Health Disparities in Urban Communities. Her primary interests are health-related decision making and health disparities research. Specifically, her two major research projects focus on African American men, age 40 and over, and their decisions to be screened for prostate cancer and African American women, across the lifespan, and their decisions to participate in a weight management and exercise program.
As a nurse, Dr. Dobal is interested in the health and well-being of the residents and collaborates with the Health Liaison in planning and providing health education programs that emphasize health promotion and disease prevention. She is also concerned about the current nursing shortage, and the image of the profession. She provides information to residents about nursing careers, serves as the liaison between the Office of Academic Affairs at the SON and the residents.
