"Just Fall":  The 2019 Youth Revolution in Sudan

MLK Symposium Event

On April 11th, 2019, after months of peaceful demonstrations, the dictatorial regime in Sudan came to an end. The past regime was in power over 30 years of rule that was defined by political repression, excessive violations of human rights, economic collapse alongside international sanctions, accusations of genocide, and the secession of South Sudan. Since December 2018, civil protest marches in the capital of Sudan and in many other cities led to the collapse of the regime. These demonstrations were organized by civic organizations, political parties and trade unions.

The focus of this presentation will be to discuss the power of the non-violence movement in Sudan in bringing about political change and the role of the youth in this process.  Though Sudan was engulfed in civil wars for over 30 years, the regime was ultimately toppled down by the impact of these civilian protests. This presentation will include the participation of Sudanese, and Sudanese-American students, some of whom have participated in these recent events in Sudan.
